As the nation celebrated the 59th Youth Day yesterday February 11, 2025, teachers and guidance remained keen ensuring the safety of their children at the various celebration grounds.
Ensuring the safety of children during the festivities remained a paramount objective for teachers, parents and guidance during the 59th Youth Day celebrated yesterday under the theme “Maturity and Responsibilities for the Consolidation of Peace, Security, Economic Growth, and Democratic Process,”. With large crowds present at the various ceremonial grounds, organizers implemented a series of strategic measures designed to protect young participants throughout the event, particularly during the march past and after the event.
The excitement surrounding the 59th Youth Day was palpable, but with it came the responsibility of ensuring that young attendees are safe and secure as stated by Effa Gideon, the Head teacher at Groupe Scolaire Bilingue Le Verger of Mimboman Yaounde. “The first thing is the security of children is first of all our main objective. The security of the children during the march past is what we put first, meaning the measures taken for the children to go and partake in the march past and come back, that is our principal goal.
Teachers, guidance, have made it clear that the security of their pupil is what the hold dear,” Effa stated. Effa further added in an interview with The National Post that with the adult-to-child ratio during participation in the march past met, for every group of students, there was a proportionate number of teachers accompanying them. “For instance, if a school sends 50 pupils, at least five teachers will be assigned to supervise them. This ensures that there is adequate control and oversight, allowing for immediate assistance should any situation arise” he said. Before the march past, the teacher added, teachers briefed students on expected behaviors and protocols that is, they also have roles to play to help themselves in order.
He said pupils were instructed to seek permission from their teachers if they wish to move away from their designated areas or interact with other children from different schools, this guidance structured approach helps maintain order and ensures that children know how to navigate the ambiance environment safely the Head Teacher explained. The presence of teachers is merely for supervision; they are actively involved in guiding students throughout the day. Teachers will accompany pupils at all times playing the role of both parents and teachers, ensuring that they remain within sight and can respond quickly to any incidents.
This hands-on involvement reinforces the safety measures in place and provides reassurance to both parents and students.
