The initiative led by Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute is aimed at addressing the escalating challenges of road maintenance and waste disposal plaguing the capital city Yaounde.
The Prime Minister and Head of Government, Chief Dr Joseph Dion Ngute has urged mayors and local authorities in Yaounde to double their efforts in addressing the hygienic situation of the capital city. The meeting was prompted by growing public concern over the deteriorating state of Yaounde’s road network and the proliferation of unsightly garbage heaps throughout the city. During the gathering attended by all the seven mayors in charge of Yaounde’s seven councils and select government members, the PM insisted on the urgent need for result-oriented actions to be taken in addressing the disturbing deteriorating conditions that have not only hampered traffic flow and disrupted daily life for residents, but have also raised concerns about public health and the city’s reputation as the nation’s capital.
Prime Minister Ngute emphasized the need for a coordinated and decisive response to the problems, highlighting the importance of upgrading the road network and clearing accumulated waste as a matter of priority. The meeting focused on developing emergency plans and identifying resources to address the most pressing issues in the short term, while also laying the groundwork for more sustainable, long-term solutions. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of collaboration and coordination between the various government entities and the city councils, urging participants to work together to achieve tangible improvements within a defined time frame. He also emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilization of resources, ensuring that funds are used effectively to address the identified needs.
In addition to immediate action, the meeting also explored long-term strategies for improving Yaounde’s infrastructure and waste management systems. This included discussions on the potential for public-private partnerships, investments in modern waste disposal technologies, and the implementation of stricter regulations to prevent illegal dumping and promote responsible waste management practices. The outcome of the meeting is expected to be a comprehensive plan of action, outlining specific tasks, timelines, and responsibilities for the various stakeholders involved. The Prime Minister pledged to closely monitor progress and provide ongoing support to ensure the successful implementation of the plan. Mayor Bala Augustin of Yaoundé 5 in an interview after the meeting, insisted on the need for timely actions, citing strategies for mobilizing equipment and personnel to expedite road repairs and clear garbage from strategic locations throughout the city.
Mayors also presented reports on the specific challenges facing their respective council areas, and proposals were put forward for streamlining waste collection services and implementing more effective road maintenance programs. “The first measure is to move all the waste around the main road and the second solution is the accessibility of the main roads of the various towns and cities,” The Mayor of Yaounde 2, Yannick Ayissi streamlined.
