The 40th edition of International Women’s Day, held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, saw a grand celebration in Yaoundé, marked by a spectacular parade of women from the North West Region of Cameroon. The event, which took place at the iconic May 20 Boulevard, brought together a diverse group of women, including queen mothers, rural women, and those holding traditional titles. The parade was an expression of the region’s deep cultural heritage and its commitment to the values of unity, peace, and national integration.
The women, clad in vibrant Women’s Day fabrics that seamlessly blended North West traditional cloth with modern design, caught the attention of the thousands of spectators who had gathered for the occasion. Their participation in the event was not just a celebration of their gender, but also a demonstration of the power of women in Cameroon and their contribution to national development. The march past was a visual representation of their social, economic, and cultural achievements, reinforcing the global message of International Women’s Day. First Lady Chantal Biya, who presided over the event, expressed her admiration for the women’s efforts. Her presence was a testament to the importance of the day, as she cheered and clapped, encouraging the participants as they marched with pride.
The women displayed a variety of messages throughout the parade, with themes of peace, unity, and national integration woven into their chants and movements. Their messages resonated deeply with the national objectives set by the country’s leadership, with a clear focus on fostering harmony and inclusivity within Cameroon. Mafor Judith Yah Sunday epse Achidi, General Manager of Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL), played a pivotal role in the success of the North West women’s participation. Known for her exceptional organizational and mobilization skills, she ensured the seamless coordination of the hundreds of women who participated in the parade.
Her leadership extended beyond the parade itself, as she also hosted a reception at the CAMTEL Club to thank the women for their unwavering support and dedication. The event was an opportunity for her to personally connect with the women and the various dance groups who contributed to the vibrant atmosphere of the day. In her speech at the reception, Mafor Yah Sunday expressed her deep appreciation for the support she had received from the North West women and the traditional rulers of the region. She credited her achievements to the blessings and guidance of the traditional leaders, acknowledging their role in shaping the cultural and leadership values of the region.
The evening before the parade, on March 7, Mafor Yah Sunday had also welcomed the North West Fons (traditional rulers) at the CAMTEL headquarters in Yaoundé, where they praised her leadership and dedication to promoting the values of unity and progress in Cameroon. The 2025 Women’s Day celebrations were held under the theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” This theme highlights the need for action that can unlock equal rights, opportunities, and power for women and girls everywhere. The theme calls for a future where gender equality is not just a dream, but a reality for all women, regardless of their background or status. It stresses the importance of creating a world where women are not only recognized but are given the tools and platforms to thrive in all aspects of life, whether socially, politically, or economically.
