Since recently bagging a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, 30-year-old Georgette Eyong has assisted Cameroonian youth by training around 500 young people.
The young owner of GYS salon located at Carrefour Centre Etoug-Ebe, offers a range of services including quality braids, makeup, wig installation, bridal hair, locs, extensions, microblading, and nail care. Currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the University of Yaoundé 2 in Soa, Eyong Georgette’s story is a legacy to the power of perseverance and the unwavering belief in one’s potential. Born into humble family background, Eyong’s childhood instilled in her a deep-seated desire to not only overcome adversity but to lift others alongside her. This drive fuelled her journey from a humble beginning to becoming a successful entrepreneur and a beacon of hope for hundreds of young Cameroonians. After earning a Bachelor degree in Accounting from the University of Buea, Eyong established her business in Etoug-Ebe, Yaoundé, in 2018. Since then, she has dedicated herself to providing practical training and workshops to over 500 youths.
Her passion isn’t simply profit driven; it’s fuelled by a personal understanding of struggle and a commitment to creating opportunities where others may see only limitations. Georgette’s own challenging upbringing, marked by financial hardship, shaped her unwavering determination to create a sustainable system that could not only support her but also empower others. This personal journey is reflected in the ripple affect her business has had on the lives of young Cameroonians. However, Eyong’s journey hasn’t been without its obstacles. he programs she runs ”I would say that no business mind works without challenges you know but I can say high taxes to be paid, and financially we’ve not been able to cover all opportunities we create for youths like providing basic work materials for them to start up because the little I get from my business can only sustain my one to two needs and again lack opportunities to show case our talent for visibility” she explains . The financial constraints mean she often struggles to provide essential work materials for the young people she trains, limiting their potential for success. A lack of opportunities to showcase their talents and gain wider visibility hinders the growth and impact of her initiatives. She highlights the need for greater support to amplify the voices and achievements of young entrepreneurs striving to make a positive impact on society. Despite these challenges, Eyong remains resolute in her mission.
Her advice to other young people is simple yet profound “Learn a skill while at school, be serious about whatever skill you choose, and after school, do not wear a closed mind. Think outside your certificates. Remember our government cannot employ everyone; maybe you need to be the reason for someone else’s smile.” She stressed the need to raise awareness among young people about business. Eyong’s story is a powerful call to action, urging young Cameroonians to harness their talents and become agents of change within their communities. Her unwavering dedication serves as an inspiration, proving that even in the face of adversity, a single individual can make a significant difference in the lives of many.
