The Head of State, Paul Biya has announced that an official state funeral will be organized for late administrator, David Abouem a Tchoyi in recognition for his significant role in Cameroon’s administrative and political landscape. With this official recognition, the government will oversee the funeral arrangements, and Minister Paul Atanga Nji, representing the Head of State, will posthumously bestow a national medal on him, highlighting his service to the nation. David Abouem a Tchoyi passed away on January 15 this year in Yaoundé
At the time of his death, he was a member of the National Commission on the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, a role that reflected his enduring commitment to national unity. A graduate of the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM), Abouem a Tchoyi served Cameroon in several high-profile positions. He was Governor of both the North West and South West Regions, Minister of Higher Education, and later Secretary General at the Presidency of the Republic. His long career saw him serve under both President Ahmadou Ahidjo and President Paul Biya, a testament to his deep understanding of governance and national affairs.
Beyond his official roles, David Abouem a Tchoyi is remembered for his vocal stance on the challenges facing Cameroon, particularly the concerns of the Anglophone population. During the early days of the Anglophone Crisis in 2016, he consistently advocated for dialogue and a peaceful resolution, urging authorities to address long-standing grievances. His insights, shaped by his experience as a Francophone administrator in the English-speaking regions, positioned him as a rare voice of reason in a complex national debate. Though his advice was not heeded at the time, history may judge him as a statesman who sought solutions for national cohesion.
His legacy will be marked not just by the offices he held but by the wisdom and integrity he demonstrated in service to his country. As Cameroon prepares to bid him farewell, David Abouem a Tchoyi will be remembered for his contributions to governance, national unity, and his unwavering commitment to a better future for all Cameroonians.
