The administrator describes the deadly attack on workers at the “La Chance Bridge” in Small Mankon in Bamenda as another instance of terrorists violating the fundamental human rights of unarmed civilians.
The Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh has condemned a recent attack on workers of Edge Company Ltd which led to the demise of one of the construction company’s workers. The administrator has also and launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of the deadly attack. Per a statement made public by the SDO on Tuesday February 4, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when a team of workers from “Edge Company” was attacked.
The victim whose name The National Post learned was Komta Elyse, was operating a track excavator at the site when he was killed following the attack. The team was assigned by the Bamenda City Council to remove debris from the old bridge which collapsed the previous year, in preparation for the construction of a new bridge. The SDO in his statement strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “barbaric act,”. The administrator described the incident as another instance of terrorists violating the fundamental human rights of unarmed civilians.
He reassured the population that investigations were underway to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice. The statement also urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with local authorities to maintain peace and tranquillity in the area. The SDO behalf of the Head of State, Paul Biya conveyed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, appealing to the public to remain calm and to continue to cooperate with local authorities in maintaining peace and security while investigation is ongoing.
He also sent his encouragement to Edge Company, acknowledging the institution’s commitment and significant contribution to road construction and infrastructure development in the region. The attack has temporarily halted bridge reconstruction work. The safety of project staff is currently under review, before work can resume.
