The team has an overall record of one win, a draw and three losses in its last five matches in the competition, complicating its chances in the early title race in the competition.
Defending champions, Victoria United Football Club of Limbe has succumbed to a second successive defeat in the ongoing first division football championship campaign. The South West Region outfit went down with a 3-0 defeat from serial league title winners, Coton Sport of Garoua yesterday at the Annex of the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua. This was during an advanced match day 10 fixture of the MTN Elite One championship. The Garoua team got two of its three goals from midfielders Felix Ourkine and Nchindo Bosco while forward Harrison Djonkep scored the third.
Team captain Felix Ourkine opened the scoring before Nchindo John Bosco added the second to make it 2-0 for the Coton Farmers at halftime. Harrison Djonkep fired in the third and last goal in the final minutes of the match. The result entails Coton Sport remains unbeaten in three matches in the championship since Minkreo Birwe replaced sacked Bonaventure Djonkep earlier this month. The 18-time champions now have three wins and a draw in four matches, the outfit having secured victories over Union of Douala, Bamboutos of Mbouda and Victoria United and played out a draw with Canon of Yaounde.
One win in five matches for Victoria United
The 3-0 defeat to Coton Sport yesterday puts the short-term run of results for Victoria United to two defeats in two matches in the championship. Before going down to Coton Sport, the team had last Sunday been beaten 3-1 goals by Gazelle Football Academy of Garoua. The academicians handed the South West Region the spanking during match day nine of the championship. The bigger picture in the league is even more frightening for the Victoria United team. The team has an overall record of one win, a draw and three losses in its last five matches in the competition.
Before locking horns with the North Region pair of Gazelle Football Academy and Coton Sport, forward Nji Richmond and the Victoria United team had recorded mixed results on the hands of AS Fortuna, Dynamo of Douala and Fauve Azur of Yaounde. Fauve Azur handed the club a 2-1 humbling on January 5 on match day five. A week after the game, the South West Region club bounced back stronger during match day six, recording an inspiring 3-1 victory against AS Fortuna back home at the Limbe Centenary Stadium. But the club did not have enough time to savor the taste of the win over Center Region team in Limbe.
On January 19, exactly a week after the victory over Fortuna, Victoria United was held to a 1-1 draw at home at the Limbe Centenary Stadium by Dynamo of Douala. That draw opened wide the floodgates for the two losses to follow in the hands of Gazelle and Coton Sports.
OPOPO complicating title chances
The continuous poor run of results is believed to be putting Victoria United in a tight position in the title race despite the fact that the season is just at its initial stages. With the likes of Colombe, Gazelle, Canon and Coton Sport all currently enjoying relative stability in terms of results, there are fears that the One People, One People team, OPOPO, Victoria United, may easily be knocked off in the race for the league crown if the outfit fails to bounce back and start picking crucial three points on match days.
