Historical Context
Diplomatic relations between Cameroon and Russia were established on February 20, 1964. Over the decades, these relations have been characterized by cooperation in various sectors, including political, military, economic, and cultural domains. Notably, in April 2022, Cameroon and Russia signed a new military cooperation agreement, reflecting a deepening partnership in defense matters. Trade between the two countries has seen gradual growth. In January 2022, Russia exported goods worth US Dollars 14.7 million to Cameroon and imported goods valued at US Dollars 400,000, resulting in a positive trade balance of $14.3 million for Russia.
This trade encompasses various sectors, contributing to the economic development of both nations. In July 2023, President Paul Biya of Cameroon attended the Russia–Africa Summit held in St. Petersburg. This summit provided a platform for African leaders and Russian officials to discuss avenues for enhanced cooperation. The participation of President Biya highlights Cameroon’s interest in fostering stronger ties with Russia and exploring new areas of collaboration.
