Born in Bafang, in the Upper Nkam Division of the West Region, Puene was raised in a polygamous family with 15 children. Her father worked as a catechist and municipal driver, while her mother, a member of the royal family of Fondjomekwet, was an agriculturist. The values instilled in her during childhood shaped her drive for success. She later pursued higher education, earning a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nantes in France. The 57-year-old’s journey to success began with small businesses, including food vending and clothing retail. Her determination led her to the hospitality industry, where she established the Franco Group. Under this umbrella, she owns a chain of hotels, including the well-known Hôtel Franco in Yaoundé.
Her businesses have significantly contributed to employment creation and the development of tourism infrastructure in the country. In March 2023, Puene took a significant step into politics, being elected as a senator under the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM). Her appointment brought a business-oriented perspective to the Senate, where she advocates for policies that promote entrepreneurship, women’s empowerment, and economic development. Her presence in the Senate has been marked by efforts to foster a conducive environment for local businesses, push for improved support structures for women entrepreneurs, and enhance investment opportunities in various economic sectors.
Puene believes that her business experience provides her with a unique understanding of the economic challenges that Cameroonians face. Beyond her business and political engagements, Puene has dedicated herself to philanthropy. She established the Puene Françoise Foundation, headquartered in Yaoundé, to assist underprivileged communities. The foundation focuses on education, healthcare, and social welfare, providing scholarships, medical aid, and other essential resources to those in need. Her social initiatives have positively impacted many lives, particularly young women aspiring to venture into business. By championing empowerment programs and mentorship initiatives, she has helped bridge gaps in economic opportunities for disadvantaged groups. Françoise Puene’s contributions to Cameroon are evident across multiple sectors.
Economically, her businesses have created jobs and boosted tourism. Politically, she brings an entrepreneurial mindset to governance, advocating for policies that support development. Socially, her foundation uplifts marginalized communities, ensuring broader access to opportunities for all.
